Chapter One
Summer
“That was a great show! The crowd ate it up! Hey, Summer.” Jake, one of the sound techs, says as we exit the stage.
I hand off my fiddle and nod as I grab the bottle of water handed to me. After drinking half the bottle, I look at him and grin. “It was, huh?” My chin jerks back toward the stage and the still roaring crowd. “They’re still losing their minds.”
Daisy, my older sister and our lead singer, wraps her sweaty arm around me and pulls me close to her. My nose wrinkles as our skin sticks together. “Ew, gross, sis!”
She laughs and squeezes me tighter before releasing me as her boyfriend, Rafe, the lead singer of Destiny Fades to Blue, our tour mates, walks toward her. Pulling her into his, also still sweaty, body, he kisses her.
I roll my eyes and mutter, “Get a room, you two!”
Fannie and McKenzie, the rest of Sweet Southern Sass, just laugh and link sweaty elbows with me.
Fannie winks at me. “Aw, I think it’s sweet.”
I feign a gag and Daisy chuckles as I mutter, “Yeah, well, do they have to do that shit all the time?”
Rafe blows me a kiss and waggles his brows. “Damn right we do. Don’t be jealous, Summer. Just find yourself a man.”
My cheeks flame and I’m so grateful for the darkness of backstage.
Yeah well, the man I’m interested in isn’t the kind of man I need to be interested in, so no thank you.
Just then, Jake steps up beside me to get my attention. Turning my head, I raise my brows. He’s really cute. I’ve been checking him out a lot lately. He’s well built, has an attractive face, a couple of tattoos, and is a nice guy. He’s also been hinting that he’s interested but so far, he hasn’t acted on it.
He asks, “Can I talk to you for just a second?”
Nodding, I unlink my arms from Fannie and McKenzie and tell them I’ll meet up with them at the bus, then turn to face Jake. “Sure thing. What’s up?”
&
nbsp; Summer and Rafe are unapologetically staring at us. Glaring at them, I turn my back in rebuff.
Taking my arm, Jake leads me away a bit and then stops. “Hey. You don’t have another show for two days and we’re going to be heading to Tennessee in just a bit. I’m from there… I was wondering if you’d be interested in hanging out tomorrow. We, the crew, have the day off, too.”
A smile covers my face. “Are you asking me out, Jake?”
He nods and laughs. “I am. I’ve been wanting to for awhile, but I wasn’t certain how you’d react. Tonight, I just decided to get over it and ask. All you can do is say no, right?!
“So, what do you say? Would you like to see Nashville the way a guy like me can show you?”
Would I? I mean… why not?
I’m single and tired of it. Besides, I’m sick to death of watching the revolving door of skanks parade through with Sean.
What do I have to lose?
Leaning over, I kiss Jake’s cheek. He chuckles. “Is that a yes or are you letting me down easy?”
Nodding, I reply. “Yeah, that’s a yes.”
Another of the sound techs yells from the stage, “Yo, get your ass back here, asshole! These bastards are heavy and we don’t get paid to flirt with the money makers!”
Jake laughs and calls back, “Chill, man! I’m coming. Give me one second.” He looks at me and smirks. “Guess I’d better get back to work. I don’t want to get fired before I can take you out.”
Laughing, I wave at the sound tech glaring at him from the stage. His face softens and he smiles at me. I call out to him, “He’s coming.” Then, I hold out my hand to Jake. “Give me your phone.”
His eyebrows raise, but he reaches into his pocket and pulls out his iPhone. Quickly punching in my number, I save it hand it back to him. “There you go, my number. Just call me tomorrow or text me once we get on the road and give me a heads up on a time and where we’re going. I need to know how to dress and make certain I’m ready.”
He looks me over and grins. “You can wear whatever you want and you’ll be perfect.” A lot of cussing and grumbling comes from the stage direction and he says, “I’d better get to it before he kills me.” He yells over his shoulder, “I’m coming!” Then, he jogs backwards toward the stage and the grumbling. He waves and calls out, “I’ll see you tomorrow, pretty lady, and I’ll text you as soon as we load up and hit the road. Texting you will be better than whatever these guys want to bitch about tonight anyway.”
Laughing, I wave back. “Sounds good.”
Turning back around, I start to walk to the hall so I can head out back to the buses. I stop with a start when I see the glaring man off to the side in the shadows.
My hand covers my heart as it races from the fright I just experienced. “Jesus, Sean. What the hell?! You scared the shit out of me. You’re lurking in the dark like a damn creeper!”
The dim lights are winking off the deep blue of his sweat soaked hair and his matching eyes look almost black in the shadows as he stares at me unblinkingly. His lip and eyebrow ring are also reflecting the light.
What the hell?
Why is he glaring at me? What did I do?
“What? Did you need something, Sean?” I ask in exasperation.
He sneers. “Well, I had a question, but I saw you were busy necking with the help and otherwise occupied, so I forgot what it was.”
I was necking with the help? I did no such thing and why is he acting like an ass?!
My hands slap on my hips as I glare at him. “I wasn’t necking with anyone. And the sound techs are hardly the ‘help’. You’re being a dick.
“Apparently you need some attention from yet another skank, so why are you in here bothering me?! I’m certain there’s a throng of willing bedmates just dying for a piece of you just outside the door.”
His eyes flash. “Careful, sweetheart. You almost sound jealous. I’m not the one making out with a roadie in full view of anyone around. But hey, you’re right. My dick could use some attention.” He quickly turns on his heel and stalks away before calling over his shoulder. “I can’t keep my adoring fans waiting.”
I’m left standing there with my mouth hanging open in absolute disbelief that he just said that to me.
I wasn’t making out with anyone! I kissed Jake’s cheek. It was a chaste kiss and there was nothing at all inappropriate about it.
He’s a jerk!
He’s a jerk alright… a jerk you can’t stop thinking about…
Son of a bitch…
I only kissed him a few times and he made no secret of the fact that he was more than willing to take things farther, but it would only be sex and I’d be one in a very long line…
That doesn’t work for me… and the reason why was never more obvious than right now.
Yes, Jake is the better choice.
That doesn’t mean he’s wrong about me being jealous though…
We’ve been on the road for awhile. The lull of the road usually comforts me and we’re on the road a lot. We’ve been on the crossover tour with Destiny Fades to Blue for five weeks now. We’ve already hit fifteen cities of the sixty-nine city tour. It’s been insane, but a good insane.
The shows have been sold out at every venue. The press has been all over us and Firefly Heartbeat, our single with the boys, hit number one on the pop charts a few weeks back and is swiftly climbing the country charts now. We were at ten last week with the new numbers coming out in two days. There’s a very real possibility that we’ll place very high on both charts this week.
I have to give it to Cypress Records. They knew what they were talking about with pairing us, Sweet Southern Sass, the highest grossing female country band in history and Destiny Fades to Blue, the bad boys of rock, for the song and tour. We weren’t sure what they were thinking, but once again… they had it right.
Things moved so fast and now… we’re on a sold out tour, our single is being played on pretty much every station, and the tabloids are all over the fact that my sister, Daisy, and their lead singer, Rafe, are a couple. It was all anyone could talk about once the news broke. Some of the appeal has worn off since everyone was expecting a quick crash and burn, but they’ve held strong. They’re a good couple regardless of their differences.
Then… there’s me and Sean. Well, there is no me and Sean. We had some heavy make out sessions a few times and I played with the possibility of just throwing caution to the wind and sleeping with him. But, my upbringing reared its ugly head and I realized I’d hate myself if I allowed him to use me like that.
The sad fact is that I actually care about him and for him… I would just be another conquest.
And the really sad fact is that he didn’t even notice I stepped back.
What a giant slap in the face.
Oh yes, I’m so glad that I didn’t give in to him.
At least I have my self-respect… and a date with Jake, the sexy sound tech tomorrow.
I need to put my energy into that and just stop thinking about Sean Scott…
Sean
I can’t get the picture of Summer kissing that guy, Jake, I think, out of my head. I was about to jump in the shower and wash the sweat and smeared makeup from performing off when I saw everyone leave the venue, except her, and I thought I’d head in and see if she needed help putting away her fiddle or guitar. Not that she normally does that herself, but it gave me a reason to talk to her.
She’s been avoiding me the past few weeks and I don’t like it.
For awhile, she flirted shamelessly with me and I flirted back in my way. We had a couple of heated moments together and I started to think that maybe it would lead to something… maybe I wanted it to lead to something… but then… she just stopped. I gave her a few days to see if maybe she’d come back around, but nothing. It was like she just got over whatever attraction she had for me.
I miss it. I actually miss her.
Her kisses did things to me that no other woman has ever done, but I thou
ght it was just because she was so sweet. So innocent and really pure. Not like the women I usually hook up with.
But more than that, I liked talking to her. She was spunky and actually had things to say that I found interesting. We could talk and laugh. Being around her made me feel… lighter.
She barely says two words to me now. She talks to me exactly the same way she talks to the other guys. Well, except for Jake…
What the hell? What is wrong with me?
Summer needs to get the fuck out of my head.
I punch the pillow in my bunk and growl loudly. “Get the fuck out! I don’t want you in here!”
Xavior asks from above me. “What the hell are you talking about dude? Who’s in here? Did some chick sneak on the bus or something?!”
Punching the pillow again, I snarl. “No, no one is on the goddamned bus! Just us.”
I hear shuffling and then his head appears over my bunk. His black hair is hanging toward the ground and his green eyes are peering at me. That’s all I can see of his face. He asks, “Ok, so what the hell are you talking about then? Who do you want to get the fuck out? And out of what?!”
Flipping him off, I mutter, “No one. Just talking out loud. Go away!” And I pull the thick sound muffling blackout curtain shut.
Flopping on my back, I stare at the bottom of Xavior’s bunk and groan. “Great, now he thinks I’m fucking insane.” Squeezing my eyes shut, I pinch the bridge of my nose. “Get the hell out of my head and stop fucking with me, Summer Anderson!”
It doesn’t work.
Chapter Two
Summer
Jake and I texted last night like he said. It was really nice to just flirt with a nice guy that I’m attracted to without having to worry about what his intentions actually are. I know that Jake likes me. He’s been very clear about that.
During our two hour text session, he finally told me what he’d like to do today. He wants take me to a local bar, Belcourt Taps, where a lot of undiscovered talent perform, and then to his family’s ranch on the outskirts of Nashville. He told me his family raises horses and he knew I enjoyed riding.
