About the Author
Chapter One
Eliza
“Ok, you’re dieting, but that doesn’t mean that I care. Just eat your lettuce and continue to be a bitch. But, for God’s sake, do it quietly.” I look in the mirror and check my lipstick for the umpteenth time.
One can never be too careful and the camera can be so unforgiving.
Natalee, my personal assistant and closest friend, glares at me from her chair across the room. She swallows with a grimace and points at me with her fork. “Are you seriously telling me to be a quieter bitch? Hello, pot. Meet, kettle.” Her stomach growls loudly and I smirk at her and purse my lips in a kiss.
This week, she’s on some kale and apple diet and, since she’s constantly hungry because that shit wouldn’t fill up a mouse, she’s a beast to be around.
I glibly reply, “Yes, I am. But, then again, I’m paid to be a bitch. Chat Time with Eliza McCormick is top rated in our time slot because people actually care about my opinion. You, however, need to eat a cheeseburger and shut the hell up. You’re a bitch because you’re hungry all the time.
“You aren’t fat. You don’t need to diet and men like women with curves.” I stand and smooth my hands down my own curvaceous hips before turning and looking at my ass in the mirror. I slap it and glance at Natalee over my shoulder while winking at her. “Embrace the booty, baby.” I shake my hips and laugh. “You can’t change it. So, you just as soon rock what God and our momma’s gave us.”
I have curves and there’s nothing I can do about it. I learned that a long time ago and stopped trying!
Hell, it worked for Ms. Marilyn and it seems to work for me, too.
You can’t change it, so, your best bet is to embrace it!
She rolls her eyes at me before glaring at her wilted kale and wrinkling her nose. “It’s summer now, Eliza. That means we’re about to travel… we have several destination shows in the next few months. The heartland, the beach… I’m sure there’ll be cause for swimwear… I know I’m not fat, but swimsuits make my anxiety flare.”
I laugh while checking my appearance once more. “Shut up. You’re ridiculous! Throw that rabbit food away. And, rock that sexy body. You have tits and an ass, Nat. Most women do and trust me, men appreciate tha
t fact about us!”
A knock sounds at my door and Natalee calls out, “Come in.”
Marlie, my protégée, and guest co-host for the week, pops her pretty little blonde head in. “Ready for the show?” She looks at herself in my mirror and I glance over her, appreciating the fact that she took my recommendation and chose the cream and navy sheath that perfectly complements my own silk blouse and navy pencil skirt for today’s show. She nods. “You were right. These outfits work great together. I look great. Of course, you always look amazing.”
I laugh in delight and wink at her, “I know. I’ve been doing this a long time, Marlie. Stick with me.
“I’ll teach you all you need to know to get your own show one day.”
I do know. I’m beautiful. I can’t deny it and there’s no point in acting like I’m unaware. I’m a woman who gets attention. I got it before my show and now that I’m a celebrity, I get it even more.
Women want to be more like me and men want to conquer me. Too bad, no man ever will.
I enjoy the company of men. I have relationships, but the second a man starts thinking I’m his property or that he can tell me what to do… it’s game over.
I don’t need, or want, any man to complete me.
Eliza McCormick is self-made, self-reliant, and brutally honest.
People know that when they come on my show, it’s no holds barred. I’ll give it to them straight and I have no qualms giving my opinion. Sometimes feelings get hurt, but I’m not going to lie to anyone to spare their pride.
What you see is what you get and what I say is what I mean.
I’m famous for speaking my mind. It works for me.
I’m either loved or hated by the masses, but either way, I don’t give a shit. Take me or leave me but know one thing… I’m as real as it gets.
From my tongue to my tits, nothing is fake about me.
Natalee checks her watch and nods at the door, “Ok, you both look fantastic. Let’s go. I give them thirty seconds before they’re back here rounding you up, so let’s beat them to it. There’s a great lineup today. It should be an amazing show.”
Marlie heads for the door and I take one more look in the mirror before nodding at myself and smiling. My makeup and hair girl is a gem. I always look perfect and put together without looking like I take any effort to be that way.
Natalee is scrolling through her tablet as she walks, “Eliza, don’t forget, we have the staff meeting at four with the itinerary for our destination show next week. You have to be here all day today. I’ve already rescheduled your massage for Thursday at two.”
I groan. “Shit. That’s right. The hick town in Texas…” Sighing, I say, “Why did I agree to do that again?”
God, a hick town… with cowboys… And women who probably are in desperate need of a facial. But, a story…
Natalee laughs. “Well, you didn’t really have a choice. You wanted to branch out, remember?! Archie is behind you on that and said that you were going.
“You threw an epic fit and then he asked if you were done and told you it was already booked.”
I glare at her from the reminder of my less than professional meltdown at the news of the impending trip.
I did want to branch out, but we could have started small and worked our way up to the damn farm in the middle of nowhere.
“Yes, well, I’m not a farm kind of woman, in case that fact has eluded you all these years. These legs are not meant to walk in freaking pastures or step in horse crap and I’m damn sure not milking cows or getting eggs from chickens.”
She laughs again. “It’s a cattle ranch, Eliza. A farm is a totally different thing.
“And, I don’t think you’ll be doing any of that. Though, I’d pay to see you milk a cow…”
Oh, please. As if…
Before I can offer a snide remark, we’re at my stage. I’m handed a microphone and with ease, I clip it under my dress and allow the battery to rest at my waist in the back. Marlie is still a little green and one of the crew is helping her and making certain her wire is concealed.
In time you’ll get it. You’re not there yet, love.
I’ve done it so often no one can tell I’m wearing anything and my outfit is still pristine and perfect. I walk out a little ahead of her as we’re given our cue. After all, it’s my show. Marlie walks a few steps behind me, not enough to be obvious, but enough that the people in the audience know who the star is.
We watch as my audience prepper works the crowd, as he’s meant to do. I wave as I make eye contact with people and Marlie follows my lead, working the audience, allowing them to fall in love with her, too.
Within seconds, we’re seated at the desk and being counted off. Then, I’m smiling into camera four as I give my opening for today’s show…
Falcon
“Dammit, I’ve already told you, Rowdy! I don’t have the time to waste on some high maintenance city girl. Not to mention, I don’t need, or want, some fancy little woman, wearing five hundred dollar shoes, tromping all over my land, itching to break her spray tanned legs, or her fool neck… Not to mention the slew of cameras that’ll probably be following her.” I growl at my brother and partner.
I don’t want this. I know that he thinks we need the publicity since we just became one of the biggest suppliers of Angus Beef in the south and he thinks that my face will help garner attention, but I’m not about that life anymore…
All I want to do is run my ranch and raise my cattle. He’s supposed to handle all of the other shit. And some fancy celebrity who wants to bring a camera crew onto my land definitely qualifies as other shit!
Rowdy tips his hat back and grins, “I know that, big brother. But, the fact is that this is a good thing. This show is popular. Hell, momma watches it every damn day. She records it and watches it after supper.
“And… that fancy little woman is also a beauty.” He grins wider and drawls. “Maybe a bit of fancy is what we need around here… at least for a little while.”
A beauty, huh?
Well, I don’t care. I don’t care if she’s the most beautiful woman in the world.
Beautiful women cause problems. It’s in their nature. And beautiful women that are famous are a whole different mess of trouble…
No thank you. I don’t need that shit in my life.
Not again.
I’ve got more than enough on my plate already.
“I don’t care if she’s beautiful. I don’t want her here and I don’t want to do it. You booked it. This is your shit show, baby brother. You can handle it all while I do what I do and that’s work this ranch. So, you and your beautiful, fancy woman just stay out of my way.”
Rowdy opens his mouth, but I brush past him, jostling his shoulder, before he can say anything else. Whatever he’s about to say, I don’t want to hear anyway.
I know that I was a little harsh, and I know he means well, but I meant what I said. I don’t want to deal with the so-called beautiful television lady.
Rowdy orchestrated it and he can handle it. He doesn’t need me.
Just because she’s on television, it doesn’t mean she’s a selfish and immature twit, Falcon. Not all of them are the same…
Hell, maybe she’s great and she’s a real doll. I mean, momma likes her show and momma can pick the coyote out of the den of dogs quicker than anyone.
Of course, she could be fantastic on her show and a real hyena when the cameras are off, too.
Nope. I’m just going to make certain that I find things that need doing far away from the cameras and the fancy lady. Lord knows, that should be an easy feat on this 650-thousand-acre ranch.
Chapter Two
Eliza
A week later
I groan as we hit more uneven dirt and I’m jostled on the seat of the rented van. I glare at Archie, who is, as usual, furiously typing away on his laptop, where it’s perched on his knees. He’s so focused on the screen and whatever he’s typing that he doesn’t even see me.
Natalee’s hands grip the seat back in front of her in an attempt to keep her ass on the seat. She chuckles from beside me. “Well, at least the scenery is pretty, huh?”
She outright laughs when she sees my face as I transfer my ire from, the oblivious, Archie to her. Looking past her, I glance out of the dusty van window. Some of my annoyance fades as I take in the scenic beauty of wherever in Texas I find myself in.
It is beautiful. It’s all flat land with an abundance of trees and fields that are somehow green even though the temperature outside is insane. They must have an in ground irrigation system for it to be so lush in this heat. The land is ruggedly fenced as far as the eye can see and the blue of the sky seems to kiss the ground on the far off horizon. The only way to tell the difference in the two is the colors.
I can see spots of what I’m assuming are horses, or cattle, grazing in the distance. Glancing back at Archie, I see that he too is now looking at the landscape, though he seems less than impressed. He nods. “My phone’s GPS says we should be at the Double Down Ranch in about half an hour.”
I nod back and mutter, “Ok, great. None too soon.” I stretch and rub my backside. “My ass could use a break from this road. I’m certain I’ll be black and blue from this less than smooth ride.” We hit another rut in the road and I groan as I’m slung against the window again.
Our driver, who introduced himself as Duke, chuckles huskily and I look at him swiftly.
Is he purposefully making certain to hit every damn hole on this road?
My eyes meet his as he glances at me in the rearview mirror. He grins and I can’t help but appreciate his rugged charm even though I’m annoyed. “Sorry about that, ma’am. We mostly drive on these roads with trucks. They handle the terrain better. No sense in paving these roads when they’re so rarely traveled by the majority of people. Besides, we prefer horseback when we can out here.” His voice is as brawny as the terrain and the twang in his words is evident.
I shudder and mutter, “Makes sense. But, I prefer luxury cars… and paved roads.”
He laughs again and I see him scratch his sun-browned forehead beneath the brim of his dark mahogany hat.
